Today we will share why should people opt for therapy and if they are skeptical, the ways in which they can mentally prepare themselves.
In life, there are moments, small and simple moments, when the mind needs assistance. This is when the heart needs a listener and someone or some source of motivation keeps us going.
Videos, podcasts, positive quotes do help but at times they have a short term impact and they mostly believe in one-size-fits-all concept though there is no doubt about the amount of temporary help they can offer.
A good friend may be a good advisor, a good listener but holds pre conceived notion about us, confidentiality is at stake and surely holds biases, unintentionally.
The family or the society does offer help but again they hold the power of judgement, they use their communication filters.
Hence a therapist helps in emotional rescue in a professional way, with a personal touch.
The therapist can never reduce the pain by creating something instantly magical but can surely channelise it by allowing us to make use of our resilience and resolving the issue, harnessing our coping mechanism and allowing us to evolve into a stronger person.
Therapy offers space to open up, a non judgemental platform where one can share EVERYTHING and the counsellee is dealt with warmth, acceptance and care.
Trying to convey what’s wrong with the body at times gets easy but processing the emotions and speaking about one’s own mental health condition may take time and here is where the therapist plays a pivotal role-allowing the counsellee’s uninterrupted venting without hesitation, discrimination and personal opinion. The target remains the same, resolving the issue, instilling positivity without enforcing it.
The person does not only attend the session in deep trouble after major incidents and bereavement , it can be for a better understanding of life, issues and challenges one suddenly comes across , excessive stress, difficulty in communicating and handling interpersonal relationships.
The person must choose a therapist wisely after going through his or her credentials, experience (most of the times), feedback from others and deciding whether to continue or not after attending atleast one or two sessions. The counsellor’s or the therapist’s duty is to make the concerned person comfortable and build trust. Therapy is non medical in nature and involves navigation. It is not about giving general advice on different topics.
One must remember that therapy is for everyone. A safe space to share, interact, introspect and resolve things can surely help one to see the bright side of life!
